To train seafarers in shipboard fire fighting, and other such essential subjects related to safety and operations where this training is not or cannot be provided by the industry directly.

Maritime defense and intermodal freight transportation courses are also included in this category.

Program Accomplishments

In fiscal year 2007, 212 seafarers completed fire fighting training.

Uses and Use Restrictions

Licensed and unlicensed U. S. seafarers in U. S. maritime industry are instructed on a fee-paid basis in safety and marine operation subjects.

Qualified U.S.

merchant seafarers, operators of inland waterway, offshore drilling, and mining vessels; maritime academy students; and personnel of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S.

Coast Guard, U.S.

Naval Reserve, U.S.

Army Corps of Engineers, qualified representatives of marine industry, State and local governments.

Beneficiary Eligibility

Qualified U.S. merchant seafarers, operators of inland waterway, offshore drilling, and mining vessels; maritime academy students; and personnel of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Naval Reserve, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Transportation Command qualified representatives of marine industry, State and local governments.

Merchant mariner's document issued to U.S. citizens by the U.S. Coast Guard.
