authorities.

Public health laboratories require the capacity to conduct tests related to a wide range of disease threats, including vaccine-preventable diseases, tuberculosis, vector-borne diseases, rabies, and novel pathogens, among others.

Public health laboratories also require the ability to conduct tests related to public health emergencies, including testing related to bioterrorism, influenza, other infectious disease epidemics, and other types of public health emergencies.

In addition, the performance and sustainability of public health laboratories are critical to public health departmentsÂ’ attainment of accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB).
